FULLERTON, Calif. – Arizona State's Mackenzie Popescue threw a five-hit complete game shut out to give the No. 2 ranked Sun Devils a 9-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton (11-15) on Thursday afternoon at Anderson Family Field. Arizona State improves to 26-1 on the season.
Popescue moves to 12-0 on the season after allowing only five hits and striking out nine batters. The Titans would threaten in the top of the first, but Popescue was able to get Tiffany Sheffler to strike out to end the inning. The Sun Devils got on the board first in the second inning after Lucy Aubrecht hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to score first baseman Bethany Kemp from third.
Arizona State would add two more in the third inning off a throwing error by shortstop Samantha Galarza. In the top of the fourth inning center fielder Alex Johnson belted a home run to left field giving the Sun Devils a 4-0 lead. Arizona State would add two more runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh inning, recording 13 total hits in the game.
Ybarra threw 3 1/3 innings allowing four runs, two earned, off nine hits. Senior Katey Laban relieved Ybarra in the fourth inning and tossed 2 2/3 innings giving up two runs off two hits. In her first career appearance freshman Monique Wesley finished the game throwing the final inning giving up three runs off two hits.
Ybarra was 2-for-3 at the plate, Samantha Galarza added a hit, and Ariel Tsuchiyama's single in the bottom of the third inning extends her reaching base safely streak to seven games.
ASU's Alix Johnson was 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored, shortstop Cheynne Coyle was 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored, and designated player Amber Freeman added two hits.
Arizona State improves to 26-1 on the season and will face No. 15 Michigan and No. 24 Virginia Tech tomorrow at the Judi Garman Classic. The Titans continue play against DePaul University tomorrow (March 15) at 7:30 p.m.
