FULLERTON, CA -
Cal State Fullerton senior defender Caitlin Mellano and junior forward Ann Marie Tangorra were named to the All-Big West Conference Second Team as voted on by the league's head coaches and released Tuesday afternoon.
It was the first all-conference honor for both players after helping lead the Titans to a 9-8-3 overall record and a tie for fifth place in the league standings with a 3-4-1 mark in Big West Conference play -- just three points out of a berth in the conference tournament. It was Fullerton's first winning season since 2007 (12-8-2 overall).
Mellano, who ended the regular season with her first career Big West Defensive Player of the Week honor, finished the season with two assists offensively and a career-high 21 shots while starting all 20 matches in 2011. The Titans' co-captain paced a defense that allowed just 21 goals (third-fewest in the Big West) and finished with five shutouts -- the lowest totals in both categories since 2009.
In her first season at the Division I level, Tangorra was Fullerton's offensive leader, pacing the team with five goals and six assists (16 points) in 17 matches while also taking 53 shots on the year. She ranked among the Big West's best during the regular season in shots (t5th), shots per game (3.12 - t5th), points (t10th), points per game (0.94 - 8th), assists (t5th), and assists per game (0.35 - 5th).
Tangorra's assist total is tied for sixth in a single season (and the most for a Titan since Jenae Gibbens finished with seven helpers in 2008) while her 53 shots are the 10th-best total in a season -- the most since current assistant coach Lauryn Welch finished with 55 shots in 2005.
