Hat Trick Lifts Tangorra to Big West Honors

Sept. 19, 2011

FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton junior forward Ann Marie Tangorra was named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon following a huge offensive weekend that helped lift the Titans to a tournament title.

It is the first career weekly honor from the Big West for Tangorra, who becomes the first Fullerton player so honored this season and the first Titan since Casey Volk on Sept. 6, 2010. Cal Poly senior goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.

Tangorra, who entered the weekend leading the team in shots (19) but had been held to just one assist through the first seven matches in 2011, opened her weekend with an assist on Nikki McCants' first-half goal against host New Mexico, but saved her big performance for the finale against former conference rival North Texas, which had entered the tournament play with just one loss in its first seven matches.

The Arcadia, CA, native completed a natural hat trick in the span of just four minutes in the first half against the Mean Green, scoring her first career Division I goal in the 28th minute, adding another less than a minute later, and completing the feat with her third goal in the 32nd minute, becoming the first Titan player to score three times in a match since Brianna Buffington at UC Irvine in 2006.

It was part of a larger offensive weekend for Fullerton, which finished with seven goals in the tournament's two matches after scoring just six times in its first seven matches of the year combined and posted its most goals in a match since it shut out Eastern Washington, 4-0, on Aug. 29, 2010.

Tangorra and the Titans return to the pitch with a pair of non-conference matches this week as the Titans travel to San Diego for a clash with the Toreros on Thursday (Sept. 22) at 6 p.m. (in a match originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m.) at Torero Stadium before hosting UNLV on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 1 p.m. at Titan Stadium.
