FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton redshirt sophomore Leslie Munoz scored her second goal of the year and senior goalkeeper Karen Bardsley made eight saves to help lift the visiting Titans to a 1-0 shutout of UC Davis on Sunday afternoon in Davis, Calif.
The victory snapped a two-match winless streak for Fullerton, which improved to 8-6-2 overall. The Aggies, who had been winless in five straight until an upset of No. 20 Long Beach State on Friday night, fell to 8-5-2 overall.
Munoz found the back of the net in only the fourth minute of play as her free kick from just outside the penalty area found the upper right-hand corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
Turns out that would be all that the Titans would need as Bardsley and the Fullerton defense were up to the task of preserving the lead. Bardsley made eight saves - including six in the second half - on the afternoon to lock up her second consecutive shutout and seventh overall this season.
It wasn't without pressure from the Aggies, however, who outshot Fullerton, 20-12 on the afternoon despite playing a man down for the final 30 minutes of the contest.
Aggies' goalkeeper Megan Daws was whistled for her second yellow card of the match in the 60th minute and was ejected from the game. Senior Heather Finlayson, a defender who had never played goalkeeper before, entered and made two saves to keep her side close.
Cal State Fullerton returns home on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at 8 p.m. as the Titans make their national television debut against Long Beach State at Titan Stadium.
