No. 6 Santa Clara Edges Fullerton in 3-2 Overtime Affair

Oct. 12, 2007

Box Score

FULLERTON, CA - Santa Clara's Katherine Reynolds scored the game-winning goal 1:43 into the first overtime period helping the No. 6 Broncos escape with a 3-2 extra time victory over host Cal State Fullerton on Friday night in front of 739 fans at Titan Stadium.

The loss was the third straight for the Titans as they fell to 6-6-1 overall while Santa Clara snapped a three-match winless streak in improving to 8-2-2. The attendance figure was the 11th-largest women's soccer crowd in school history.

A rocket by Meagan Snell 19 seconds into overtime from a tight angle was just tipped off the crossbar by the Titan keeper, setting up the game-winning sequence. A throw in by Kiki Bosio was punched out of a crowd and miscleared right to the feet of Reynolds, who placed her shot perfectly from 20 yards out to the upper left corner to end the match.

Four of the five goals scored came in a furious second half, but it was the Titans who rallied in the final 20 minutes to send the game into overtime for the second straight match and the sixth time overall this season.

Trailing by two, Fullerton got on the board in the 69th minute as Tanya Slusser converted on a penalty kick after she was held down in box by the Santa Clara goalkeeper. It was Slusser's first goal of the year and the first of her career, cutting the Broncos lead to 2-1.

The Titans then took the match to the final minutes before striking for the equalizer. After a throw in by Jenae Gibbens, the Broncos couldn't get a good foot on the ensuing clear attempt as the ball fell to Geminesse Martinez, who followed with her first career goal from 25 yards out to the upper left corner with only 1:43 remaining in the match to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half with Santa Clara holding a 5-2 advantage in shots, but the Broncos were the first to break on to the scoreboard in the 49th minute.

Kiki Bosio ran onto a long ball by teammate Jessie Baddley and beat the keeper to the lower right post for her fourth goal of the year and the 1-0 advantage. The Broncos added another in the 65th minute as Chioma Igwe netted her first of the year, as Bosio's throw in was misdirected to Igwe, who misdirected it past the keeper through a crowd from within five yards to make it 2-0.

Santa Clara held an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 5-2 lead in corners. Six different players had shots for Fullerton while Bosio had five to lead the Broncos.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14) at 1 p.m. as the Titans resume Big West Conference play against Pacific at Titan Stadium.
