FULLERTON, CA -
Cal State Fullerton seniors Rebekah Patrick and Erica Pryor each scored goals and junior goalkeeper Karen Bardsley tied the school record with her 13th career shutout as the Titans tallied a 2-0 victory over visiting Cal State Northridge on Friday night at Titan Stadium.
The victory improved Fullerton's record to 9-3 overall and evened its league mark at 1-1. The loss for the Matadors snapped a nine-match winning streak as they fell to 10-2 overall, 2-1 in Big West play.
For Bardsley, the shutout was her fifth of the season and 13th of her career, tying the standard set by Laura Janke from 2000-03. Bardsley made four saves in the match.
Fullerton tallied quickly in the match as Patrick netted her fourth goal of the season, taking a short pass from Desiree Flint, dribbling to the top of the box and unleashing a shot past goalkeeper April Cline to the left post for the 1-0 advantage.
The score remained that way until the 72nd minute when Pryor added an insurance goal on a nifty sequence. Senior Kellie Cox's corner kick found the head of senior Marlene Sandoval who headed it back to the right post. That's where it found the head of Pryor, who headed it into an open net for the final 2-0 score.
Seniors Kandace Wilson and Lisa Kosena led all players with four shots as the Titans outshot the Matadors, 20-9, including a 12-4 margin in the second half.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9) as the Titans continue Big West play against Pacific at 1 p.m. at Titan Stadium.
