Titans' Winning Streak Ends With 2-0 Loss to Gauchos

Oct. 5, 2007

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, CA - UC Santa Barbara's Kailyn Kugler scored the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute of the match and the Gauchos' defense stifled Fullerton's offense, allowing just eight shots on the night in their 2-0 shutout victory over the Titans on Friday night at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The loss ends Fullerton's three-match winning streak, dropping the Titans to 6-4-1 overall and 1-1 in Big West Conference play. UCSB improved to 4-5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

The eight shots by the Titans were a season-low and were the fewest for a Fullerton squad since the eight shots taken in a 2-1 win over Cal Poly in the championship match of the Big West Tournament last season.

The Gauchos, who tied a season-high for a Fullerton opponent this season by unleashing 21 shots on the night, got on the board in the first half as Kugler, who led all players with six shots on the night, punched in a rebound off a shot from 30 yards out by Brooke Salyer for her third goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.

UC Santa Barbara, which held an 11-3 advantage in shots after the first period, then added an insurance goal in the 80th minute as Michelle Russell netted her second goal of the season, guiding a shot to the lower left post from the top of the box off a pass from teammate Katrina Wright to make it 2-0.

Fullerton's best chance to score came just before halftime when senior Kristen Boujos unleashed a shot from about 45 yards out, hitting the crossbar. Freshman Christina Murillo then tried to follow with a rocket of her own, but UCSB goalkeeper Katie Wright made the save to keep the Titans' scoreless.

Senior Lauren Cram led Fullerton with four shots on the night while junior Shayla Sabin was busy in net, making a career-high tying seven saves.

Fullerton closes out a five-match road swing on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as the Titans take on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
