DAVIS, CA - Cal State Fullerton seniors Brianna Buffington and Lauren Cram each scored first-half goals on Sunday afternoon to help lift the visiting Titans to a 2-0 victory over host UC Davis in the Big West Conference women's soccer opener for both teams at the Aggie Soccer Stadium in Davis, Calif.
The win moves Fullerton to 4-3-1 overall on the year and 1-0 in league play while the Aggies suffered their first home loss of the year in falling to 4-4.
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Buffington scored her second goal of the season. She received a pass from teammate Kristen Boujos and was able to get past her defender. After drawing the keeper out, she tapped a shot in near the right post.
In the 16th minute, Cram scored from the middle about 15 yards out when she redirected a pass from Geminesse Martinez on the right side for the 2-0 advantage.
Cram, who hadn't scored a goal since her freshman season, has now accounted for four of the Titans' last five goals scored over the course of their last three contests.
UC Davis held a 12-11 shot advantage, but Fullerton's defense was up to the task in posting its second shutout of the year. Junior goalkeeper Shayla Sabin gathered five saves in earning her first clean sheet of 2007.
Sunday's match at UC Davis opened a five-match road swing for the Titans that continues next weekend as they travel to San Jose State on Friday (Sept. 28) and Fresno State on Sunday (Sept. 30).
