Sept. 16, 2005
FULLERTON, CA -
Cal State Fullerton seniors Marlene Sandoval and Kellie Cox each tallied second half scores on the night to help lift the Titans to a 2-0 victory over New Mexico in the opening match of the 2005 Four Points University Plaza Arizona Soccer Classic on Friday night in Tucson, Ariz.
Fullerton improved to 5-2 overall on the season with the victory while New Mexico fell to 2-2-2, snapping its three-match unbeaten streak.
After a scoreless first period that saw both teams combine for only seven total shots, the Titans opened the scoring in the 65th minute as Sandoval netted her third penalty kick goal of the season to give her side the 1-0 advantage.
Just over eight minutes later, Cox added her third goal of the year, converting a pass from senior Kandace Wilson to make it 2-0.
Junior goalkeeper Karen Bardsley and the rest of the Titans' defense then shut the door, fending off three shots from the Lobos' offense to secure the win. Bardsley made four saves on the night in notching her second shutout of the season.
Cal State Fullerton outshot New Mexico by an 11-10 margin while amassing five corner kicks to none for the Lobos.
The Titans return to action on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. as they take on Utah, which is ranked as high as No. 18 in the nation according to Soccer Buzz.
