FULLERTON, CA - San Diego's Jackie Zinke scored twice, including the eventual game winner nine minutes into the match, and the host and 12th-ranked Toreros out-shot Cal State Fullerton by a 10-5 margin en route to a 2-0 shutout victory on Sunday afternoon in the final match of the USD Nike Classic in San Diego, Calif.
The loss was the third consecutive shutout defeat for the Titans, who fell to 0-4 overall. Fullerton has never started a season with four consecutive losses, surpassing the previous worst start of 0-3 set in 2001 when the Titans eventually finished 13-7, won the Big West Conference, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
USD improved to 3-2-1 overall with the win.
Zinke's first goal of the season came in the 10th minute of play, burying her attempt to the right corner after passes from teammates Stephanie Ochs and Hallie Huston for the 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until the 55th minute when Zinke converted on a corner kick by Ochs, batting the ball past the goalkeeper from five yards out for the final 2-0 tally.
Fullerton junior Tanya Slusser finished with two shots, both on frame, to lead the Titans, who were held to fewer than 10 shots for the fourth straight match. Zinke led all players with four shots on the afternoon.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action next weekend, kicking off a three-match homestand with a pair of contests at Titan Stadium. The Titans host Michigan on Friday (Sept. 11) at 2 p.m. before welcoming San Francisco for a 1 p.m. battle on Sunday (Sept. 13).
