Second-Half Goals Keep Women Perfect

Sept. 5, 2008

Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. - Janae Deas, Jenae Gibbens and Casey Volk each scored goals to lead Cal State Fullerton's women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Alabama in a non-conference match Friday at Titan Stadium.

The win helped Cal State Fullerton (4-0) tie its best start in school history, matching the mark set by the 1995 team. The only other time the Titans faced Alabama (1-1-1) was also a 3-1 victory back in 1997 during the Reebok Classic at Titan Stadium.

Deas put the Titans out in front with a goal at the 29:58 mark of the first half. After taking a pass from Stacey Fox, Deas drove to the net and blasted a shot past Alabama's goalkeeper Kara Gudmens.

Veronika Wolfkeil of Alabama headed in a rebound that tied the game up at 1-1 when Kelsey King's corner kick bounced off the hands of Cal State Fullerton's goalkeeper Shannon Simpson.

Gibbens, the reigning Big West Player of the Week, gave the Titans a 2-1 lead at the 68:16 mark in the game when she banged home a header off a cross pass from Christina Murillo.

Volk closed out the scoring for the Titans with a breakaway crossover dribble and hot shot that sailed past Gudmens to put the Titans up 3-1. She is the seventh different Titan to score in the young season. The crowd of 839 was the eighth largest for women's soccer in Titan Stadium.

The Titans play again at 1 p.m. Sunday at Titan Stadium when they face off against Santa Clara in a battle of nationally ranked teams.
