FULLERTON, CA - Monica Ocampo scored the game-winner for Mexico in the 66th minute while teammate Evelyn Lopez added a goal and an assist on Sunday afternoon to lift the visiting Mexican National Team to a 3-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a friendly exhibition between the two squads at Titan Stadium.
Ocampo's go-ahead goal came in the 66th minute as she took a pass from Lopez and finished for her fifth goal of Mexico's collegiate tour to the right post, just glancing off the fingers of Titan keeper Shannon Simpson and sneaking the ball just inside the post.
Lopez added an insurance goal later in the match, dancing around the Titans' defense and knocking a one-timer to the left post in the 84th minute for the final tally.
Mexico played the aggressor for most of the first half, outshooting Fullerton 11-2 for the period, but the match remained scoreless until a flurry of action in the final five minutes of the half.
Mirelle Arciniega put Mexico ahead in the 41st minute as Ocampo, who led all players with four shots on the day, settled at the top of the box and passed it back to her streaking teammate, who lined a low shot to the left post for the 1-0 lead.
That advantage didn't last long as a run by the Titans a minute later netted the equalizer in the 42nd minute. Sophomore Casey Volk made a run to the left post and passed it back to freshman Kimi Cece in traffic, who then launched a rocket to the right side and make it a 1-1 contest.
It was only the fourth goal allowed by Mexico in its five-match collegiate tour.
Mexico almost regained the lead in the final minute as Lopez broke free from the Titans' defense and unleashed a shot to the low left corner that just tipped off the fingers of keeper Shannon Simpson and ricocheted off the post to preserve the tie.
Simpson also had key saves in the 26th and 27th minutes, denying Arciniega and Lopez to keep the match scoreless.
Mexico finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 6-1 lead in corner kicks. Simpson made five goal-saving stops on the afternoon for the Titans while Mexico keeper Cecilia Santiago made one save on the afternoon.
Cal State Fullerton resumes its regular season next weekend with its first road matches of the season, joining host San Diego, Southern California, and Ohio State at the USD Nike Classic.
