FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton seniors Erica Pryor and Kandace Wilson each tallied a goal and an assist on the day to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Titans earned their first victory of the 2005 season, 5-1, over visiting San Jose State on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.
Fullerton improved to 1-1 overall on the year while San Jose State fell to 0-2 overall.
Five different Titans scored goals on the afternoon while senior Lisa Kosena (Englewood, Colo.) added a pair of assists in the victory.
However, it was San Jose State's Kristin Krale who gave the Spartans the early lead with her sixth-minute goal, taking a cross from Angela Dohrmann and chipping it over a leaping Shayla Sabin (San Clemente, Calif.) in goal for the 1-0 lead.
A flurry of goals by the Titans ensued as Cal State Fullerton scored three unanswered tallies to close out the first half.
Pryor (Upland, Calif.) notched the equalizer in the 17th minute, heading home a long pass from Kosena into the right corner to knot the match at 1-1. The Titans took the lead for good eight minutes later as Wilson's (Walnut, Calif.) rocket from the top right corner of the box bounced down off the cross bar for the 2-1 advantage.
Rebekah Patrick (Billings, Mont.) closed out the first half with her first goal of the year, breaking behind two defenders, gathering a pass from Kosena, and chipping it over a charging Adrienne Herbst in net to make it 3-1.
Fullerton didn't stop there, adding two more goals after the break. Stacey Thompson (Saugus, Calif.) netted her first of the season seven minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Wilson in the box and tapping the ball past Herbst for the 4-1 lead.
She was followed by Kellie Cox (Lancaster, Calif.), who closed out the scoring in the 87th minute, launching a shot from approximately 30 yards out to the crossbar and in for the final score.
Cal State Fullerton finished with a 23-5 advantage in shots, including three shots each by Wilson, Pryor, and Lauryn Welch. Shayla Sabin made three saves in net for her first win of the season while Herbst made seven saves in the loss.
The Titans return to action next weekend with their first road contests of the season, heading to the Auburn/Reebok Classic on Sept. 2 & 4 in Auburn, Ala.
