MALIBU, CA - Cal State Fullerton senior Tiffany Craig scored her first career goal in the 70th minute on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Titans posted a 1-0 shutout of host Pepperdine in front of 402 fans at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, Calif.
Fullerton (1-0) won a season opener for just the second time in its last five tries and the first since a 4-0 victory over Idaho to open the 2006 season. It was the Titans' first win over the Waves (0-1) since 1996 and their first win in Malibu since 1994.
Craig, who took only one shot in 13 matches off the bench last season, made the most of her lone shot on Saturday, blasting a strike from 12 yards out into the top corner for the only score of the game.
Both teams took 14 shots on the afternoon, but sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Simpson and the Fullerton defense was up to the task, turning away the tying tally in a two-minute span late in the game.
Simpson made perhaps the biggest of her four saves of the afternoon in the 84th minute, turning away Amanda Rupp's penalty kick attempt, and the Titans' defense cleared back-to-back point-blank shots off the line by Ashley Copp and Laura Cole on the ensuing corner kick - one of 12 corners for the Waves on the day.
Redshirt sophomore Claudia Munoz led the Fullerton offense with three shots (two on goal) on the day while three other players finished with two shots. Emily Wynne had four shots for Pepperdine to lead the offense in support of goalkeeper Kayla Stolte, who made six saves on the day.
Cal State Fullerton looks to build off a strong start next weekend as the Titans remain on the road and head north to Berkeley, Calif., for the California Invitational. Fullerton will open tournament play against the host Golden Bears on Friday evening (Aug. 29) at 4:30 p.m. before taking on Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) at 1 p.m.
