FULLERTON, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton's senior duo of midfielder Erica Mazeau and goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic helped the Titans finish their non-conference schedule on a high note, garnering Big West Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors in the process.
The tandem becomes the second and third Fullerton honorees of the season, joining teammate Morgan Batcheller, who was named the league's defensive player of the week on Sept. 2, 2013. It is the first career honor for Mazeau and the second for Maricic, who earned her first career honor on Oct. 8 of last season.
Mazeau assisted on two key goals for the Titans against last week's West Coast Conference opposition, feeding Christina Burkenroad in the 40th minute to give Fullerton an early lead in a 1-1 draw with Pepperdine, which was receiving votes in the national polls. Back at home on Sunday, she delivered the game-winning assist in the 74th minute against Gonzaga, skidding a pass across the goalmouth to a charging Janali West, who netted the go-ahead goal.
The senior Yorba Linda, Calif., native leads the team with three assists and marked her third-consecutive match with an assist dating back to a 2-1 double overtime with at USC.
Maricic outlasted an offensive onslaught from the Waves in her only action of the weekend, finishing with a career-high 15 saves to preserve a 1-1 draw. She faced 34 shots and defensed 13 corners from Pepperdine in 110 minutes, posting the second-highest single-match save total in school history, trailing only the 21 stops by Heidi Clauss against the Waves in 1993.
She enters the week leading the Big West Conference with 57 saves, leaving her just one shy of the school's single-season top 10 list, 6.33 saves per game, and an .891 save percentage.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action this weekend, hosting Hawaii on Friday (Oct. 4) at 7 p.m. and Cal State Northridge on Sunday (Oct. 6) at 6 p.m. to open league play.
