2008 Western Athletic Conference Freshmen/Transfer All-Academic Team

FULLERTON, CA - The Cal State Fullerton women's gymnastics team has placed 12 student-athletes on the Western Athletic Conference academic honor roll the league office announced.

Five freshmen and seven gymnasts of sophomore standing or above were listed as champions in the classroom after meeting the conference's requirements of completing one academic year with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and competing in at least 50 percent of the team's athletic contests.

Seniors Amanda Van Horn and Melissa Schafer along with juniors Jessica Tait and Alana Mouery were each honored for the second time on the Academic All-WAC squad for winter sports while sophomore's Jessica Merriam, Kori Underhill, and Shannon Kawada were named to the all-academic team for the first time.

Freshmen Alaina Baker, Shelly Cooper, Karina Flynn, Taylor Miller, and Maddie Steinauer were also listed among the conference's best in the classroom, named to the all-academic team for spring sports after completing a full academic year.

The five Titan freshmen named to the all-academic team were tied with Boise State's group for the most in the conference while the seven winter sports honorees ranked behind only San Jose State and Sacramento State, which placed eight student-athletes apiece.

The 12 Titans named to the academic team continues a strong tradition of excellence in the classroom under head coach Jill Hicks, who has had 17 student-athletes named to the WAC All-Academic team a total of 25 times in her two years as head coach.
