Gymnastics Picked Fifth in Western Athletic Conference Coaches Poll
Jan. 8, 2008
FULLERTON, CA - The Cal State Fullerton women's gymnastics team was picked to finish fifth out of six teams in the Western Athletic Conference in 2008 according to a vote of the league's coaches released on Monday. The Titans, who received 14 points, finished just ahead of San Jose State in sixth place with 12 points. Two-time defending conference champion Sacramento State and last year's runner-up Southern Utah stand tied atop the poll with 27 points each, but the Thunderbirds picked up three first-place votes to the Hornets' one. Boise State and Utah State also each received a first-place vote and tied for third in the coaches poll with 23 points overall. Fullerton finished last season with an 8-7 overall record and a 4-1 mark against WAC opponents, but finished fifth at the conference championships with a score of 193.625. The Titans return eight letterwinners and welcome a class of eight talented newcomers to the roster for the 2008 campaign under the direction of second-year head coach Jill Hicks, who was voted the 2007 WAC Coach of the Year. Cal State Fullerton opens the regular season this weekend with a pair of dual meets against conference foes beginning on Friday night (Jan. 11) at 7 p.m. at San Jose State. The Titans then head north to take on Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13) at 2 p.m. 2008 Preseason Gymnastics Coaches Poll |
