Blue Rebounds to Defeat Orange at Beauty and the Beast Intrasquad Meet

FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton freshman Shelly Cooper finished second on bars and floor to help lift her "Blue Team" to an intrasquad gymnastics meet victory at the third annual "Beauty and the Beasts" competition with the Titans' wrestling team on Sunday afternoon at Titan Gym. The blue team scored a 111.600 in a modified scoring system that saw only the top three scores in each event count toward the total team score instead of the usual five. The orange team, which lead by four-tenths of a point after three rotations, scored a 110.900 as a team to finish second. Cooper, who also finished second in the all-around with a score of 36.200, scored a 9.375 on bars to finish second and a 9.225 on floor for second place in the exhibition. Freshman Alaina Baker posted a trio of top three finishes and won the individual all-around competition to pace the orange team. Baker, who also won the floor exercise with a 9.425, finished the meet with a 37.575 all-around score. She also finished second on vault (9.65) and third on bars (9.30). The Titans also got standout performances from another pair of freshman in Maddie Steinauer, who won vault for the orange team with the highest score of the day at 9.70, and Karina Flynn, who won beam for the orange team with a 9.575. Sophomore Shannon Kawada took home individual honors for the blue team on bars, scoring a 9.40. The Cal State Fullerton women's gymnastics team opens its 2008 season on Friday night (Jan. 11) at 7 p.m. as the Titans travel to San Jose State. INDIVIDUAL RESULTS |
