FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton senior Shelly Cooper took home the vault title for the first time this season, but it wasn't enough to offset a big night from defending conference champion Southern Utah, which swept the top three spots on three events Friday night en route to a Western Athletic Conference women's gymnastics victory at Titan Gym.
The Thunderbirds scored a 193.000 to outpace the host Titans, who finished with a 187.275 on the night.
Cooper's vault of 9.80 gave the senior her first individual title of the year, nearly missing her career best of 9.85 set and later matched as a sophomore. She also finished just out of the medals on floor, ending up fourth with a 9.575.
Senior Alaina Baker finished third in the all-around with a 37.475, posting her best finish of the night on vault with a 9.65 - good for a fifth-place tie. Junior Taylor Kearns was the Titans' highest finisher on bars, scoring a season-high 9.525 to finish seventh, while junior Vanessa Klass led the way on beam, scoring a 9.475 to finish fifth.
Southern Utah's Brooke Cersosimo took home the individual all-around title with a 38.650, edging out teammate Ari Lamb, who finished with a 38.300, for the top spot. Cersosimo also won individual honors on beam with a 9.775 while teammates Alyssa Click (9.80) on bars and Lindsey Schultz (9.75) on floor also won events on the night.
Cal State Fullerton's homestand continues next Friday (Feb. 18) with another WAC dual meet as the Titans welcome Sacramento State for a 7 p.m. match-up.
