Fullerton Edges Sacramento State for First Win of 2008
Jan. 13, 2008 SACRAMENTO, CA - Cal State Fullerton freshman Alaina Baker followed up a stellar collegiate debut on Friday with another standout performance, winning the all-around and leading a 1-2-3 Titan finish on floor to help her team to a 189.525-189.000 victory over preseason conference favorite Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif. Baker, who finished third in the all-around in Fullerton's season-opener on Friday at San Jose State, scored a career-best 38.200 to take home individual honors. She also scored a 9.725 to win floor and finished second on both vault and bars with a 9.65 and 9.675, respectively. Her win on floor led a sweep by the Titans (1-1 overall) in the event as sophomore Kori Underhill and senior Melissa Schafer finished tied for second with a 9.60. Freshman Shelly Cooper also had a solid afternoon, finishing tied for second on bars with Baker and Sacramento State's Amber Basgall, all scoring 9.675 on the afternoon. In a back-and-forth meet, Fullerton took the early lead after scoring a 47.850 on bars to Sacramento State's 47.800 on vault in the first rotation, but the Hornets (0-1 overall) responded with a 48.175 on bars in rotation two, outscoring the Titans by six-tenths of a point. Cal State Fullerton then took the lead for good in rotation three, scoring a 47.775 on floor while Sacramento State struggled on beam, counting two falls despite a 1-2-3 individual finish led by Marina Borisova's first-place score of 9.675 en route to a team total of 47.125. Leading by .05 entering the final event, the Titans scored a 46.375 on beam to close out the meet, but were helped by yet another struggling performance on floor for the Hornets, who saw five of the six athletes in the lineup suffer falls in the event and finished with a score of 45.900. Fullerton opens its home schedule next Sunday (Jan. 20) as the Titans host UCLA, Brown, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a quad meet beginning at 2 p.m. at Titan Gym. TEAM SCORES |
