Titans Edged in Final Rotation at San Jose State
Jan. 11, 2008 SAN JOSE, CA - Cal State Fullerton freshman Alaina Baker posted a trio of top-three finishes and finished third in the all-around while freshman Maddie Steinauer took home first place on vault, but host San Jose State used a strong final rotation to come from behind and defeat the Titans, 191.050-189.825, in a Western Athletic Conference women's gymnastics dual meet on Friday night in San Jose, Calif. Trailing by six-tenths of a point after two rotations, Fullerton scored well on floor in rotation three, scoring a 48.200 capped by Baker's 9.825 - which was good for second place. The Spartans, meanwhile, posted a solid 47.025 on beam, but it wasn't enough as the Titans took a .625 lead into the final rotation. Fullerton, however, could not hang on to the advantage, struggling to a 46.450 score in the final rotation on beam with sophomore Kori Underhill and junior Jessica Tait scoring a team-high 9.50. San Jose State took advantage of the opening left by the Titans, scoring a 48.200 on floor to take home the win. Individual all-around champion Alise Blackwell (38.850) won floor with a 9.85 as three Spartans scored better than a 9.70 in the event to help their team to the victory. Baker closed out a stellar collegiate debut by also finishing third on vault (9.70) and tying for second on bars (9.65) to go along with her finish on floor. Steinauer scored a 9.825 on vault in her collegiate debut to bring home first place in the event. Cal State Fullerton takes a day off before competing against two-time defending conference champion Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13) at 2 p.m. TEAM SCORES
