Former University of Denver standout Casey Dobyns returns for her second year with the Cal State Fullerton coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2009 season while also working toward her master's degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports psychology. Dobyns was a four-year competitior for the Pioneers, helping her team to a 10th place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships with a 195.575 team score. Dobyns scored a 9.875 to finish in a tie for 13th on vault. She competed in all 15 meets for Denver last season on vault, leading the team with a 9.86 average on the apparatus and posting a season-high 9.90 in the event five times. The Woodinville, Wash., native also qualified for nationals in 2006 as an individual competitior on vault, scoring a 38.975 in the all-around and a 9.90 on vault at regionals to advance. Dobyns finished in a four-way tie for 27th at Nationals after scoring a 9.75. As a sophomore in 2005, Dobyns competed in all 13 meets for the Pioneers, leading the squad on vault with a 9.888 average and finishing third wit a 9.838 average on floor while winning nine individual event titles and one all-around title. She scored at least 9.9 on vault in 10 meets and had only one score below a 9.85. At regionals, Dobyns scored a 38.925 in the all-around, including a 9.85 on vault to tie for second place. Dobyns competed in all 13 meets for Denver as a freshman on vault and floor, finishing second on the team on vault with a 9.838 average and recorded a 9.8 or better in each of the team's last 12 meets. She competed on vault and floor at the 2004 regionals, tying for first on vault with a 9.9 and qualifying for nationals, where she finished in a tie for 25th with a 9.825. Before joining the Pioneers, Dobyns was a Level 10 gymnast for the Cascade Elite Gymnastics club near Seattle where she was a four-time Junior Olympic national qualifier. She placed third on vault in 2000 and improved on that showing with a second-place finish in 2001. In 2003, the team finished third overall while Dobyns finished seventh on floor and 10th on vault. Born Nov. 11, 1985, in San Diego, Calif., her parents are Bill and Liz and she has a fraternal twin brother, Daniel, and three other siblings, brothers Paul and Jake and sister Katie. Dobyns graduated from the University of Denver in 2007 with a degree in psychology and was a four-time Scholastic All-America as selected by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women. |
