SUGAR GROVE, Ill.  – Martina Edberg had a difficult first round of play on Friday afternoon at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship and finished the day tied for 92nd after firing 11-over-par 83 at Rich Harvest Farms.

The senior will return to play at 8:25 a.m. CT (6:25 a.m. PT) on Saturday for round two.

Edberg is one of 12 individuals competing at the championship, and is the first Titan to reach the final since the program was reinstated for the 2009-10 season. In addition to the 12 individuals, there are 24 teams participating in the championship for a total of 132 players.

The championship format consists of all 24 teams and 12 individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play Friday-Sunday, and then the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion on Monday. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the championship on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Edberg advanced to the national championship after tying for second at the Albuquerque Regional, and completing the competition as the top individual finisher.

On Tuesday, Edberg was one of five NCAA Division I women's golf student-athletes named to the 2016-17 PING Women's Golf Coaches Association Player of the Year watch list.

The award will be announced after medal play at the upcoming NCAA Championship.
