Waves Crash Over Titans With Big Second Half

Dec. 12, 2008

Box Score

FULLERTON, CA - Pepperdine's Miranda Ayim tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and the Waves used a 15-3 run to open the second half to help lift them to a 58-40 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Friday night at Titan Gym.

The loss dropped the Titans to 3-5 overall on the season, suffering their first loss in four chances against a West Coast Conference school, while Pepperdine improved to 4-4 overall.

No Titan reached double figures as Megan Richardson and Lyndsey Grove finished with a team-high nine points. Junior Jasmine Scott finished with a team-best seven rebounds, leading the team for the second time this season.

Skye Barnett came off the bench to add 10 points for the Waves, who shot 54 percent during their second half rally after struggling to hit just 26 percent from the field in the first half.

Fullerton led by as many as eight points in the opening period, but that advantage was erased thanks to a 10-2 run and Pepperdine scored their first lead of the game with 2:24 remaining on a jumper by Ayim to lead 21-19.

The Titans, who led 26-25 at halftime, would not lead by more than three points the rest of the way as the Waves found their shooting touch out of the lockerroom and the defense, which forced 29 Fullerton turnovers on the night, held the Titans to without a field goal for the first four minutes of the period.

Cal State Fullerton was held to just two field goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, hitting just 2-of-18 from the floor as Pepperdine extended its lead to as many as 24 points.

The Titans outrebounded the Waves, 41-36, on the night - the first opponent that Fullerton has won the battle of the boards with this season. However, the Waves converted the 29 Titan miscues into 27 points and held them to just 14 points in the second half.

After breaking for finals next week, Cal State Fullerton returns to the court on Saturday (Dec. 20) as the Titans travel to San Diego to take on the Toreros at 2 p.m.
