Late Surge Lifts Toreros Over Titans, 64-58
Dec. 7, 2009
FULLERTON, CA - San Diego's Sam Child scored a game-high 15 points and the visiting Toreros used a 16-4 run over the final five minutes to erase a six-point deficit and lift them to a 64-58 come-from-behind victory over Cal State Fullerton on Monday night at Titan Gym.
The loss dropped the Titans to 3-4 overall on the season while USD evened its mark at 5-5 overall with the victory.
Sophomore Megan Richardson finished with 15 points to lead the Titans, reaching double figures for the fifth time in seven games after scoring just five points combined in her previous two contests. Junior Britt Peters came off the bench to add a career-high 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including a trio of key three-pointers to kick-start Fullerton's second-half resurgence.
Held to just 16 points and 26 percent shooting in the opening half, Fullerton engineered one of their biggest rallies of the season, whittling down a 15-point San Diego lead thanks, in large part, to a 20-5 run that was capped by a three-pointer from junior Ashley Richie to give the Titans their first lead of the game, 45-44, with just over seven minutes to play.
Two free throws by junior Lyndsey Grove and a three-pointer by Peters gave Cal State Fullerton a six-point advantage at 50-44 with 6:08 remaining and the Titans held the same lead following a pair of free throws by Richardson with 5:28 to play.
That's when San Diego found its second wind, holding Cal State Fullerton to just a pair of free throws over the next three minutes while exploding for an 11-2 run that erased the six-point lead and gave the Toreros a three-point, 59-56, advantage with 3:10 to play.
Two free throws by junior Jenna Breite brought the Titans back to within a single point at 59-58, but Fullerton could not find the basket that would put them over the hump, going 0-for-5 from the floor in the final two minutes while USD hit 3-of-4 from the line to ice the game.
Three other starters joined Child in double figures for San Diego as Emily Hatch scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, Dominique Conners added 11 points, and Morgan Woodrow finished with 10 points in the win.
The Toreros shot just over 47 percent from the field for the game, including a 50 percent clip in the second half to help bring them back. Fullerton outrebounded San Diego, 40-37, led by Breite's seven boards.
Cal State Fullerton's four-game homestand continues on Wednesday (Dec. 9) at 7 p.m. as the Titans welcome Loyola Marymount to Titan Gym for a non-conference contest.
