Hot-Shooting Dons Hand Titans First Loss

Nov. 20, 2009

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - San Francisco's Donnisha Taylor netted a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds and the host Dons shot 48 percent from the floor on Friday night en route to a 71-63 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton at War Memorial Gym.

The loss was the first of the season for the Titans (2-1), who were hampered by a cold shooting night from the floor, hitting just under 35 percent from the field for the game after entering the night shooting better than 42 percent from the floor in their first two contests. USF (1-1) earned its first win of the year after opening the season with a loss to UC Davis on Tuesday.

Sophomore Megan Richardson continued her blistering start to the 2009-10 season for the Titans, hitting 7-of-15 from the floor and finishing with a team-high 19 points before fouling out after 33 minutes. She was joined in double figures by junior Lyndsey Grove (12 points) and senior Jasmine Scott (10 points).

Fullerton led by a point at 26-25 with 3:44 remaining in the first half on a lay-up by Richardson, but that would be the last time the Titans would see the lead as the Dons closed out the half by scoring 12 of the final 19 points to lead, 38-33, at the break.

Behind for the first time at halftime this season, Fullerton came out of the locker room chipping away, whittling the USF lead down to just three points, three minutes into the second period, but the Dons would keep the Titans at arms' length before finally pulling away late.

An 11-point San Francisco lead with 8:29 to play turned into just a two-point lead at 63-61 with three minutes to play as a 15-6 run by Cal State Fullerton, capped by a three pointer from Scott, brought the Titans to within striking distance.

However, the Dons hit 8-of-10 from the line down the stretch and held the Fullerton offense to just three shots in the final two-and-a-half minutes to clinch the victory.

USF went to the line 28 times on the night compared to just 15 for Fullerton while the Titans also struggled from behind the arc, making just 2-of-18 from long range.

Cal State Fullerton closes out its six-game road swing to start the year next weekend, giving thanks in Eugene, Ore., as part of the four-team World Vision Invitational hosted by the University of Oregon. The Titans open tournament play against the host Ducks on Friday (Nov. 27) at 7:30 p.m. before taking on a pair of postseason participants from a season ago in Portland State on Saturday (Nov. 28) at 2 p.m. and Wisconsin on Sunday (Nov. 29) at noon.
