Matadors Sweep Series With 78-67 Victory
Feb. 21, 2009
NORTHRIDGE, CA - Cal State Northridge's Whitney Ligon scored a team-high 19 points and led three teammates in double figures to help lift the host Matadors to a, 78-67, Big West Conference women's basketball victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night.
The Titans fell to 7-17 overall and 4-9 in conference play while Northridge improved to 6-19 overall and 3-9 in the Big West. It was the first time the Matadors had ever swept the season series from Fullerton since joining the league.
Sophomore Lauren Chow led all players with a season-high 21 points for the Titans while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out six assists. Senior Toni Thomas added 16 points and nine rebounds to narrowly miss out on a double-double while junior Sabrina Gonzalez came off the bench to add a career-high 10 points in the loss.
Cal State Northridge led wire-to-wire, leading by as many as 21 points in the first half thanks in large part to a 25-4 run over a six-minute span to go up 35-14 with 2:25 to play in the period. The Matadors, who shot 47 percent from the floor, held the Titans to just 28 percent shooting and carried a 39-20 into the locker room at the break.
The Matadors kept up the intensity after the break, starting the second half on a 10-2 run and building their lead to as many as 27 points with just seven minutes gone in the period. Fullerton chipped away at the advantage, using a lengthy run of its own (21-8) to get to within 13 points and eventually closed the gap to nine on a three-pointer by Chow with 27 seconds play, but that would be as close as the Titans would get.
Northridge held off any sort of rally at the free throw line, hitting 9-of-10 from the stripe in the final two minutes to secure the win.
Tonicia Tademy grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists to log a double-double for the Matadors while Neeta Sreekanth scored 16 points off the bench in the win. Ashley Blake (13 points) and Katrina Thompson (10) were also in double figures for Cal State Northridge.
Cal State Fullerton closes out the home portion of its 2008-09 schedule on Thursday (Feb. 26) at 7 p.m. as the Titans take on UC Riverside at Titan Gym.
