DAVIS, CA - Cal State Fullerton freshman Megan Richardson tied a career high with 18 points to lead a group of four Titans in double figures as they opened their Northern California road trip with a 71-59 victory over host UC Davis on Thursday night at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif.
The win for Fullerton (6-8 overall) was its third in the last four games as the Titans improved to 3-1 in Big West Conference play - the program's best four-game start in the league since posting an identical record in 1990-91 en route to the team's best-ever record in Big West play (14-4).
The Aggies fell to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in league action with the loss.
Richardson hit 7-of-12 from the floor to lead a quartet of Titans in double figures. Senior Toni Thomas added 15 points and nine rebounds in the win, while sophomore's Lauren Chow (13 points, career-high seven assists) and Lyndsey Grove (10 points) also finished in double digits.
The two teams played even through the first eight-plus minutes as neither side led by more than four points en route to a 16-16 tie with 8:32 to go in the period. Back-to-back three-pointers from Chow and Thomas triggered an 8-0 run for the Titans, who finished the period on an 18-6 run to close out the period and take a 34-22 lead into the locker room at the break.
A stingy Fullerton defense held UC Davis to just 29.6 percent shooting in the opening half, turning 16 Aggie turnovers into 17 points while the Titans' offense hit on 40 percent from the floor - including 5-of-9 from three-point range.
Cal State Fullerton continued its hot shooting into the second half, using a 10-5 run over the first four minutes and lead by as many as 18 points on a three-pointer by Richardson with 14:55 to play.
However, the Aggies would not go quietly, firing back with a 16-2 spurt over the next four-plus minutes to whittle the Titans' advantage down to just four points at 51-47 with just under 10 minutes to play. UC Davis kept the deficit to single digits, trailing by just four points once again with 5:39 to play before Fullerton closed strong.
Sophomore Lyndsey Grove scored inside to kick-start a 12-2 run for the Titans, who scored 14 of the final 20 points in the game en route to the win.
Freshman Kasey Riecks led a trio of Aggies in double figures, finishing with 17 points and six rebounds, and was joined in double digits by Lauren Juric (11 points, seven rebounds) and Paige Mintun (10 points, seven rebounds).
Cal State Fullerton closes out its brief trip north on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as the Titans take on Pacific in Big West play at the Spanos Center.
