Jan. 14, 2012
Bakersfield, Calif. -
Mya Olivier had career highs of 21 points and 17 rebounds and Kathleen Iwuoha also had a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds Saturday afternoon to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 67-58 non-conference victory at CSU Bakersfield.
The Titans (8-8) snapped a 2-game losing streak but the Roadrunners (3-18) lost their 11th game in a row. Ciarra Ford had 17 points and Amber Williams added 14 but CSUB was outrebounded, 56-23. Injury-plagued CSUB suited only 8 players.
Lauren Chow had 15 points, 6 assists and 7 rebounds and made back-to-back field goals that put the Titans in control at 60-53 with 3:12 to play. After Ford hit a 3-pointer, Chow nailed two free throws to make it 62-56 and Megan Richardson clinched it with a trey for a 65-56 lead with 1:47 to play.
Richardson hit two late free throws for 11 points to keep her streak alive of at eight games in a row in double figures.
Part of Fullerton's dominance on the backboards was negated by turnovers, 25 total and 14 in the second half.
Bakersfield's only lead of the game was at 3-2. Fullerton's biggest lead was 7 in the first half and 9 in the second half. The score was last tied at 42-42 at 16:17 but CSUB was within a point at 54-53 at 6:49.
"Any road win is a good win," said Fullerton Coach Marcia Foster. "I was glad we maintained our composure. We needed to string together a couple of buckets and we finally did that. They attack the rim and our zone helped slow things down.
"Mya and Kat did a great job on the boards giving us numerous second chances."
Fullerton returns to Big West Conference play next week with a game at UC Irvine on Wednesday and one on Saturday at UC Riverside.
