Position: Head Coach

Hired as the eighth head coach in the four-decade history of Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball in 2009, Marcia Foster returns to the Titan Gym sidelines for her fourth season at the helm of the Titan program, committed to her quest of leading Fullerton to the top of the Big West Conference.

Originally hired as an assistant coach upon the return of Dr. Maryalyce Jermeiah in 2003, the 2012-13 season will mark Foster’s 10th year with the Fullerton program, helping turn around a program that had won just 12 games in the previous three seasons combined. During her tenure in Orange County, Foster has helped lead the Titans to 100 wins (which is more than the previous 12 seasons combined) and double-digit win totals in six of the last seven years.

Her head coaching debut in 2009-10 saw her lead Fullerton to a 15-17 overall record and an 8-8 mark in Big West play - the fourth .500 finish in the league for the Titans in five seasons. Fullerton led the Big West in free throw percentage (.740), three-point defense (.295), and offensive rebounding (16.4 rpg), while ranking second in turnover margin (+2.4) and fourth in scoring offense (65.1 ppg) and defense (64.8 ppg).

The 2010-11 season fell short of expectations after injuries to major contributors derailed the team’s strong start en route to a 9-21 overall record and a 5-11 finish in Big West play. Led by strong guard play, Fullerton once again led the league in three-point percentage defense (.301) while also finishing atop the conference in free throw percentage (.759). The Titans’ offense also found a groove, averaging 65.3 ppg, good for fourth in the Big West, and shot .392 from the floor - the highest marks in both categories for a Fullerton squad since the 2005-06 team averaged 67.7 ppg and shot .394 from the field.

The 2011-12 season brought improvement in the win column, as she led the Titans to an 11-19 overall record and the program’s 11th consecutive Big West Tournament appearance. She also helped guide Megan Richardson, Lauren Chow, and Mya Olivier to all-conference honors.

Off the court, Foster has also helped foster a sense of community service within the program, establishing the “I’ll Tell 2” program designed to increase breast cancer awareness for the entire student-athlete population at the university and annually participating in the Susan G. Koman “Race for the Cure” prior to the start of each season.

With the “I’ll Tell 2” program, each player is responsible for telling two other people about the importance of early detection, then asking them to tell two more people as well. The project culminates with a “Day of Awareness” on campus, where the message is spread to the entire university community.

Prior to joining the Titans, Foster spent one season as the head coach at Cal Tech in Pasadena, CA, and six seasons as an assistant coach at Big West rival Cal Poly, helping turn-around the Mustangs program from four wins in her first season in 1996-97 to 12 wins in 2000-01, advancing to the second round of the Big West Tournament that year and ending perennial power UC Santa Barbara’s 49-game conference winning streak during the regular season.
