FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton (12-12, 4-7 BWC) snapped their six-game losing streak with a 74-62 victory UC Santa Barbara (6-19, 3-9 BWC) on Saturday night. The Titans, as a team, shot a blistering 53.2% from the field and 45.5% from three.
Raina Perez led all scorers with 18 points on 7-11 shooting to go along with four assists. Jade Vega was right behind her with 16 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Hannah Thompson was clutch down the stretch scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter and finishing with 14 for the game. Daeja Smith was the fourth and final Titan in double-figures recording her eighth double-double of the season wth 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Perez took control of the game from the start scoring the first bucket and continued to roll from there. At the end of the first, Fullerton led 15-14 and the redshirt sophomore scored or assisted on every single point scored by the Titans.
UCSB started to take control in the second quarter going on a 9-2 scoring run extending their lead to eight. However, Fullerton battled and cut the deficit down to just three heading into the break.
With the second half underway, the Gauchos started to run away with the game once again going on an 8-0 run and getting their lead to double-figures. Once again the Titans would battle back as they ended the third quarter on a 14-3 run of their own and it was a brand new ballgame heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter, the Titan defense stepped up in a big way. Holding UCSB to their lowest scoring quarter of the night, the Gauchos shot just 31.8% in the final quarter as Fullerton ran away with the game. Thompson knocked down what would be the game-winning shot with a deep three from the win putting the Titans up by two with 3:35 left to play.
Fullerton is back in action in a Saturday matinee against Cal Poly. The Titans and Mustangs will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. at the Robert A. Mott Athletics Center.
