Feb. 9, 2007
Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton won nine of the 10 bouts to cruise to a 35-3 non-conference wrestling victory Friday night over San Francisco State. The win evened the Titans' dual-meet record at 7-7 with one more match to go against Northern Colorado Saturday night in Titan Gym. John Drake opened the match with a 15-4 major decision over Alexis Lara at 197 pounds and heavyweight Wade Sauer followed with a 19-4 technical fall in 3:00 to get the Titans off to a 9-0 lead. Jaime Hernandez (125), T. J. Dillashaw (133) and Teddy Astorga (141) followed with wins to make it 19-0 and set up the most entertaining match of the night at 149 pounds. Fullerton's Nick Blackshaw, subbing for the injured Morgan Atkinson, beat Jeff Johnson, 4-3, in a match that went into a second overtime round. Neither wrestler scored in a one-minute extra period. Johnson could not escape Blackshaw in the next 30-second period but Blackshaw did elude Johnson for the decisive point in the next 30-second period. The Gators followed that match with their only victory as Kenneth Packard beat Paul Tice, 5-3. Cal State Fullerton 35, San Francisco State 3 197 - John Drake (CSF) maj. dec.
