Northwest Trip Poses Major Challenge
Sept. 16, 2008
Seattle, Washington - Cal State Fullerton plays its fifth and sixth road matches of the young 2008 season this weekend in Seattle where the Titans will face host University of Washington and the University of Portland in the Husky Fever Classic. Seattle has not been a hospitable venue for Titan teams in the past so the 2-4-0 squad of this season will have its work cut out for it. Fullerton is 2-8-0 all-time (all between 1987 and 2000) with Washington, a former co-member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Fullerton is 1-1 vs. the Huskies at home, 1-5 in Seattle and 0-2 on neutral fields. "Both teams have shown they they can score goals in bunches while also giving up a fair share," said Titans' Head Coach Bob Ammann. "Washington has scored in each of their 5 games while Portland has in all but an away loss to Creighton. "You really can't put too much emphasis on team's records. The parity of teams today is remarkable and results across the country are proving this fact." The Huskies are 2-3 this season with wins over College of Charleston (4-1) and at Furman (4-0). They lost to Fairleigh Dickinson and Virginia Tech, both 2-1, and at Portland last weekend, 3-1. Freshman Brent Richards has 4 of the team's 11 goals with Dylan Tucker-Gangnes and Jo Jo Katz each scoring twice. Stephen Fung (1-2-0, 2.00 GAA) and Rylan Hawkins (1-1-0, 0.92 GAA) have divided time in the nets. Portland takes a 2-2-1 record into a Friday match against New Mexico. The Pilots have beaten Fairleigh Dickinson (4-0) and tied Virginia Tech (2-2) and lost at Creighton (3-0) and to Saint Louis (5-1) before beating Washington in Portland. Sophomore Frankie Lopez has 5 goals and no other Pilot has more than one. Austin Guerrero has played all but 7:28 at goalkeeper and has a 2.14 GAA. Fullerton is 2-3-1 all-time vs. Portland, the most recent meeting being a 3-2 CSF win in overtime in 2003 in Titan Stadium. The Titans will continue to play on the road. They have only one match next week -- at Bradley in Peoria, Illinois -- and then travel to Cal Poly to open Big West Conference play on Oct. 1. The next home match, only the third of the season, is Oct. 4 vs. Houston Baptist.
