Titans Beat Pair of Alumni Teams
Aug. 25, 2007
Fullerton, Calif. - Senior Skyler Thuresson and newcomer Andres Jarquin were the offensive stars as the Titans defeated a pair of alumni teams in the final men's soccer tuneups for the 2007 Cal State Fullerton season. Thuresson had two goals and Jarquin tallied one in the opening match, a 7-0 victory over alumni from prior to 1990. In a more competitive second match, Jarquin scored twice and assisted on a Thuresson goal in a 3-2 win over players from 1992 to 2006. Jarquin, a freshman from Guatemala, scored the game winner in the second match on a header with about 5 minutes to play. He had put the varsity ahead, 1-0, and then Thuresson broke a 1-1 tie on a nice feed from Jarquin. The alumni got goals from Hector Orellana and Brent Whitfield, the latter on an assist from Orellana. The other four goals in the opening match were scored by Reid Baker (2), Gabriel Farfan and James Maynard. Seventeen players from the 1970s and 80s participated, as many as 15 at a time. The younger alumni team played the match straight up with a 15-man roster that included Olympian Brian Dunseth and Sheldon Thomas, the two-time MPSF Pacific Division player of the year in 1996 and 1997. Fullerton opens its season on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. vs Long Island University. |
