Overtime Goal Ends Mistri's CSF Career with Loss
Nov. 12, 2005
Fullerton, Calif. - Andrew Villalobos' first goal of the year ended the 2005 men's soccer seasons for UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton Saturday night as it came in the second overtime period and gave the Highlanders a 2-1 Big West Conference victory over the host Titans.
UCR ends the season at 6-12-1 overall and 4-6-0 in the Big West. Fullerton loses its fifth in a row to finish 4-14-1 overall and 1-9-0 in the Big West in the final game of Coach Al Mistri's 25-year tenure.
Villalobos one-timed a long cross from Randy Poggio past Titan goalkeepr Kevin Puder with only 3:51 remaining in the second extra period. Puder had made two brilliant saves of UCR shots earlier in the period.
Fullerton avoided its 11th shutout of the season when Jose Barragan headed in a long cross from Taylor Sheldrick with 1:58 remaining in regulation. It was his team-leading seventh goal of his senior season.
UCR had taken a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute when Joel Crompton scored on a similar play on a cross from Tre Lee.
Fullerton outshot the Highlanders, 22-13, and missed several early scoring opportunities. Converted midfielder Andrew Hills played his fourth game in the nets for UCR and logged his second victory by making 5 saves.
Mistri retires with a Fullerton and career record of 264-203-40. He began the year as the 20th winningest active coach in NCAA Div. I and 37th (tie) all-time.
