FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton sophomores Oscar Aguero and Oscar Medina each found the back of the net on Saturday night to help lift the host Titans to a senior night victory over visiting UC Riverside by the score of 2-0 in front of 529 fans at Titan Stadium.
The victory moved the Titans to 8-9-2 overall and 4-5-1 in the Big West Conference, but they will miss out on the fourth and final Big West tournament berth after Cal State Northridge defeated UC Irvine, 3-0, giving the Matadors enough points to pull ahead of Cal State Fullerton in the standings.
UC Riverside finished its 2009 campaign 1-16-1 overall, 0-9-1 in Big West play.
Aguero got the Titans on the board first in the 33 rd minute as senior Jamall Farquharson sent a cross to the back post from the left side to Aguero, who unleashed a rocket back to the left post for his fourth goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.
It remained that way until the final 10 minutes when Medina came through with his first goal of the season, settling a ball from teammate Shay Spitz, calmly turning to his left and firing to the right post for the insurance goal and a 2-0 final advantage.
The Titans, who outshot the Highlanders by a 17-9 count on the night, got three saves from starting keeper Trevor Whiddon, who turned away two solid scoring chances in the second half by UC Riverside's Robert Cate.
The first came in the 72 nd minute as he one-timed a short cross just wide from inside six yards while the second came with just over eight minutes to play when Cate fished a ball out of traffic after numerous touches by both teams, but was snuffed by Whiddon on the point-blank save.
Spitz led all players with six shots on the night for the Titans, who had eight different players log at least one shot on the night. Joel Garcia led the Highlanders with three shots for the match while keeper Cody Suppe made two saves in net for UCR.
