Fullerton, Calif. -
Brian Behrad and Christian Gonzalez Diaz each scored a goal Saturday night as Cal State Northridge spoiled Cal State Fullerton's season finale and senior night for eight departing players with a 2-1 Big West Conference men's soccer victory.
Both teams completed their seasons with .500 records. The Matadors finished 8-8-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the Big West by completing a season sweep of the Titans, who ended up 7-7-5 and 1-6-3.
Senior Lucas Clardy's first career goal with 55 seconds to play avoided a shutout for Fullerton.
Behrad scored in the 40th minute at the end of a well-executed counter, converting lead passes fromm Carlos Benavides and Chris Smith by beating goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon on the ground. What proved to be the decisive goal came in the 71st minute when Diaz rolled a rebound of an Alberto Rosas shot through Whiddon at the near post.
Clardy's goal came just outside of the goal line of a strong ball from the left side by Kevin Venegas, who was credited with his team-best sixth assist.
Fullerton played without three regulars due to cards assessed Wednesday at UC Davis.
Manabu Kaji got the win in goal, playing the first 45 minutes with 2 saves. Michael Abalos played the second half and had 4 saves. A defender saved the Matadors in the first minute of the second half, stepping in front of a shot by Ritchie Gonzalez just outside the goal line. Whiddon made 4 saves in his final game.
