Irvine Wins Regulation Shootout over Titans

The UC Irvine men's soccer team (10-4-3, 6-1-1) defeated Cal State Fullerton 4-3 Wednesday night in Big West Conference action at Anteater Stadium.

The Titans (4-11-1, 1-6-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute as Jose Barragan headed a cross from Skyler Thuresson over the head of the keeper. Thuresson added a second goal in the 34th minute on a breakaway following a pass from Barragan to give the Titans a 2-0 lead going into the half. Junior Anthony Hamilton (Grand Terrace/Colton HS) scored off a pass by freshman Matt Murphy (Mater Dei HS) in the 59th minute to get the Anteaters on the board. Hamilton scored again in the 66th minute off a cross from Murphy to tie the game at 2-2. Murphy found Hamilton again, this time on a breakaway as Hamilton scored his third goal in the 70th minute to give UCI a 3-2 lead. Barragan took a cross inside the box from Eugene Brooks in the 77th minute to tie the match a 3-3. Anthony Hamilton found junior Brad Evans (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) on a cross as Hamilton drew the keeper out of the box and crossed it to Evans for the gamewinning goal.

Senior keeper Ryan Mathy (Lafayette/Acalanes HS) had five saves in the match for the Anteaters. Keeper Bobby Armstrong had five saves on the night for the Titans.

Anthony Hamilton recorded his second straight hat trick after scoring three goals against Cal Poly Oct. 29th the first player ever to score consecutive hat tricks in UCI history. Hamilton tied the UCI single-game scoring record with seven points with three goals and an assist. His three-goals also tie the UCI single-game goals record. Matt Murphy's three assists tie the UCI single-game assist record as well. The Anteaters tied the UCI record for most Big West Conference wins in a season with their sixth victory of the season.

The Anteaters go on the road to Davis to face UC Davis in a non-conference match Saturday, Nov. 5th at 1:00 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field. Fullerton hosts Cal State Northridge Saturday at 2 p.m.
