Fullerton, Calif. -
Two teams struggling to regain the momentum of impressive starts stopped losing streaks Saturday night but didn't taste the satisfaction of victory.
Kevin Venegas for Cal State Fullerton and Ben Sperber for UC Riverside scored second-half goals and the Titans and Highlanders played to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of Big West Conference men's soccer action.
Fullerton snapped a 3-game losing streak but hasn't won in its last five matches for a 6-4-3 overall record and 0-3-1 Big West mark. UCR, one win shy of matching the school record, also snapped a 3-game losing skein and ended the night 6-5-2 and 1-3-1.
Venegas put Fullerton on the scoreboard first in the 52nd minute with a head-first diving header at the right post, converted a cross from the left side from Jameson Campbell and beating Cody Suppe. But UCR tied the match in the 83rd minute when Sperber found a ball in his chest after a looping pass from Ivan Garcia and blasted a shot past Titan keeper Trevor Whiddon from about 15 yards.
"The result tonight wasn't for lack of effort. The boys gave everything and I was proud of them," said Head Coach Bob Ammann.
"We created chances and just need to do better with our final touch.
"This was a game we feel we let 2 points get away. With 6 games to go in conference it is imperative that we start picking up points."
Suppe made only 3 saves and Whiddon 2 but each had an outstanding stop. Whiddon tipped a blast of a free kick by Alex Racca just over the cross bar late in the first half. Suppe's best save came midway through the first overtime when he deflected a blast from just inside the penalty box by Nate Fischer.
UCR had another good chance in the second overtime as a Whiddon save at a post led to a series of four cornerkicks in less than a minute. Fullerton came close when a sliding Campbell couldn't get a foot on a pass through the box.
