Riverside, Calif. - Kevin Venegas' unassisted goal late in the first half broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Cal State Fullerton to a 2-1 Big West Conference men's soccer victory Saturday night at UC Riverside.
The win improved the Titans' records to 3-6-2 and 2-2-0 in the Big West while the Highlanders fell to 3-7-1 and 0-3-0.
Venegas stole the ball from a UCR defender and scored his third goal of the season in the 42nd minute after each team had scored in the opening six minutes. Fullerton struck only 68 seconds into the match when Mark Nelson's cross was deflected by Celso Alvarez to Jesse Escalante, who punched in his first collegiate goal. Tyler Wilson's goal tied it for UCR at the 5:18 mark. It came after a throw-in and a short cross.
Trevor Whiddon went the distance in the net for the Titans, making 8 saves. Nick Goldreich had 4 saves for UCR.
