Fullerton, Calif. -
Daniel Gray scored twice and Brent Richards once in the final 39 minutes as Washington rallied for a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon over Cal State Fullerton to take second place in the Titans' Men's Soccer Tournament.
The Huskies are 2-1-1 overall after a 1-0-1 showing in the tourney. Fullerton fell to 0-2-2 with its second tourney loss. San Jose State earlier won the tourney with its second win, 3-1 over Cal State Northridge.
Gray tied the score with a penalty kick in the 52nd minute after a hand ball in the penalty box was assessed against the Titans' Mark Nelson. Richards broke the 1-1 tie when he took a lead pass from Casey McCool and beat Fullerton goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon in the 83rd minute. With the Titans pushing forward looking for the equalizer, the Huskies put the match away when Gray converted a fast-break pass from Matt Van Houten into his second goal in the 85th minute.
Washington's Stephen Fung had to make only one save to run his record to 1-0-1 in the net. Whiddon made 5 saves and kept the Titans close despite several ball-handling errors by himself and the backline.
The all-tournament team:
From San Jose State: GK Jonathan Lester, Nick Murphy, Josh Boemecke and Ricky Martin.
From Washington: Taylor Mueller, Dylan Tucker-Ganghes and Daniel Gray.
From Cal State Northridge: Joe Franco, Rene Anguiano.
