Moraga, Calif. - Nick Posthuma converted a pass from Celso Alvarez into a goal from about 10 yards out in the 70th minute and that earned Cal State Fullerton a 1-1 tie with USF at the Saint Mary's Tournament Sunday in Moraga.
The Titans (0-0-2) had fallen behind on a goal by the Dons' (1-0-1) Jeff Penna in the 43rd minute.
"It was a great performance from the team against a quality opponent that plays a contrasting style and who had just beaten a top ranked team Friday night," said CSF Head Coach Bob Ammann.
"We were unhappy that we didn't get the game winner with all the opportunities we created. I thought we were defensively strong again and our ball movement in possession was much better than Friday.
"We were able to get a number of our first-year players experience in a physically challenging game. We look forward to playing in front of our home fans next weekend and building on our performances of the weekend."
Trevor Whiddon was credited with 3 saves in the Titans' net while Brendan Roslund stopped 8 Fullerton shots for USF, which had upset No. 9-ranked Northwestern, 1-0, at home on Friday night.
The Titans outshot the Dons, 20-10.
Saint Mary's won its own tourney with a 3-2 win over Northwestern later Sunday. The Gaels jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and withstood two late Northwestern goals.
Fullerton opens its home season this weekend with a tournament of its own. The Titans will play San Jose State on Friday night and Washington on Sunday. Cal State Northridge is the fourth team.
Saint Mary's (first-place) 1-0-1 (win tiebreaker with USF on 'goals for') Win/Loss record was a tie, head-to head they did not face each other and goal difference was also a tie.
USF (second-place) 1-0-1
CSUF 0-0-2 (third place)
Northwestern 0-2-0 (fourth place)
