Maryland Routs Titans in Opener
Sept. 2, 2005
Fullerton, CA - Stephen King scored three first-half goals and four overall Friday night to lead Maryland to a stunning 7-0 shutout over host Cal State Fullerton in the teams' season openers. King's first three goals came in less than a 10-minute span midway through the first half as the Terrapins' opened a 3-0 lead. Graham Zusi made it 4-0 before the half and then capped the scoring in the 68th minute. Craig Salvati (61 minutes) and Chris Seitz (29 minutes) teamed up in goal for the shutout for the Terrapins. Yavapai College transfer Bobby Armstrong gave up the first five goals in his Titans' debut with freshman Kevin Puder playing the final 26 minutes. The loss was the worst in Fullerton's 30-year Div. I history. The Titans lost to UC Irvine, 7-2, in 2001, and lost a pair of 6-0 decision to UCLA in the 1980s. |
