Fullerton, Calif. -
Hector Orellana converted a cross from Marco Mesrobian into a tie-breaking goal from about 20 yards out with about 20 minutes remaining and James Maynard added what proved to be the winning score 12 minutes later Wednesday night for a 3-2 men's soccer victory for the alumni over the Cal State Fullerton varsity.
Orellana's shot beat goalkeeper Bryan Escalante, who later made a nice save on a close-in shot by Earl Alexander only for the rebound to spin away from the post to the lingering Maynard less than a yard from the goal line. That goal became decisive when the varsity's Anthony Rosales headed in a goal off a pass from Spencer Johnson with about 75 seconds to play.
Alum Brent Whitfield scored the game's first goal when he took a precise lead pass from Art Ramirez and came in alone on Escalante, netting a goal in the sixth minute. Ramirez and Whitfield almost teamed up again for a second goal five minutes later but Whitfield's shot hit the right post and Escalante was able to cover the ball.
The varsity, which rested its probable starters for Friday's season opener at Saint Mary's, tied the match in the third minute of the second half. Joshua Corona headed a high pass from Kevin Burg into the right corner, beating goalkeeper Tyler Andrews, who played the second half in the net after coach Sam Reynolds had a shutout in the first half.
Alums Whitfield and Eugene Brooks nearly teamed up for a go-ahead goal in the seventh minute of the second half but a shot from in close hit the left post and the players collided with Whitfield down for several minutes and neither returned to action. Ramirez just missed the right side of the goal with a running header in the 55th minute.
The varsity's Michael Denny hit a post with a long free kick late in the first half.
