FULLERTON, Calif. – In a rematch of the 2016 Big West Conference Championship game, Cal State Fullerton men's soccer (7-5-2) and CSUN (6-6-2) battled until the bitter end to finish in a 0-0 draw Wednesday night at Titan Stadium.
Neither team took control of the game, with stats relatively equal throughout the match. Fullerton did outshoot CSUN 15-11 and outearned the Matadors in corner kicks 6-4. Of the Titans 15 shots, six of them were on goal while five of CSUN's 11 shots were on goal. Samuel Goni led Fullerton with four shots while Oscar Flores and Ross McPhie added three.
The Titans had a string of great opportunities in the 78th minute when Bass Sarr had a strong shot on goal that was saved by Matadors goalkeeper Henrik Regitnig. Titans' midfielder Oscar Flores had another chance on the rebound from Sarr's shot but hit the ball just off of the post from the right side of the net.
Both goalkeepers had strong performances as Fullerton's keeper Paul-Andre Guerin finished with five saves and Matadors' keeper Regitnig finished with six.
With the draw the Titans are now in second place in the Big West Conference at 2-2-1, totaling seven points, just behind UC Irvine who has eight points with a 2-1-2 record after its win over UC Riverside Wednesday night. CSUN trails the Titans with five points with a 1-2-2 record in conference play.
Fullerton looks to come up with a much needed win Saturday night as they head to UC Riverside to take on the Highlanders at 7 p.m. PT at UCR Soccer Stadium.
