Titans Fall at UC Davis On Late Strike

DAVIS, Calif. -- Alex Henry's first goal of the season with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted host UC Davis to a, 2-1, Big West Conference men's soccer victory over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon.

The Titans remained winless in Big West play this season as they fell to 4-9-1 overall and 0-3-1 in league matches thus far -- all against the conference's North Division. The Aggies improved to 5-4-4 overall and 3-1 in league play with the victory.

After Alex Aguiar's penalty kick goal in the 37th minute gave UC Davis the lead at the half, Fullerton responded with the equalizer in the 63rd minute via the foot of sophomore Ian Ramos. Teammate Jameson Campbell's header was deflected out by Aggies goalkeeper Omar Zeenni to Ramos in traffic, who one-touched it into the right corner after a scramble in the box to bring the Titans level.

It was Ramos' second goal of the season as the Utah native became only the third Titan (Jesse Escalante and Anthony Rosales) to tally multiple goals in 2012.

That set the stage for Henry's game-winner in the 80th minute as the junior controlled a clearance from the Fullerton defense and struck a low, hard shot from 35 yards out to the far right corner for the go-ahead score.

The Aggies outshot the Titans, 17-8, for the match and Fullerton bested Davis by a corner kick, 7-6. Jesse Vega, Campbell, and Ramos each had two shots to lead the Titans, while Aguiar finished with four shots on the day to lead all players.

Fullerton will have a relatively light week to prepare for its Big West Conference South Division opener on Saturday (Oct. 13) as the Titans travel to in-county rival UC Irvine for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Anteater Stadium.

NOTES: Sunday's loss marked the sixth time in nine defeats that the Titans have gone down by a single goal... the two road defeats this past weekend at Sacramento State and UC Davis extended Fullerton's winless streak in true "road" matches to 10 (0-8-2) dating back to a 3-0 win over American on Sept. 16, 2011, in Washington, D.C... junior goalkeeper Bryan Escalante played the entire second half on Sunday at UC Davis, making only his second appearance of the season and credited with one save... Ramos' goal was his first since Sept. 16 in a 3-1 win over Syracuse.
