Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton opens its 2007-08 men's basketball season Friday night at 7:05 p.m. in Titan Gym against Cal State Bakersfield, a program playing its first full Div. I season.
The Roadrunners have a young squad for third-year Coach Keith Brown with eight underclassmen including five community college transfers. The Titans by contrast have an 11-man roster with 5 juniors and 6 seniors.
Fullerton is coming off a 78-58 exhibition win over Biola University. Bakersfield has played two exhibitions, losing to Alaska-Anchorage last Saturday, 80-69, and to San Francisco State, 76-73 on Nov. 1.
The teams have met only one time since the 1975-76 season with the Titans registering an 83-46 victory at home on Dec. 5, 1986. Fullerton leads the all-time series which dates to 1972-73, 5-2.
Fullerton will be debuting Washington State transfer Josh Akognon, who scored 21 points against Biola after a strong showing in a scrimmage last Saturday at USC. He sat out last season as a redshirt. Other Titan newcomers are community college transfers -- point guard Junior Russell, off guard Marcio Lassiter and center Eddie Lima.
The Titans will be right back in action on Sunday at 3:05 p.m., hosting Cal State Los Angeles. That game will be preceded by an alumni vs. alumni game at 11 a.m. which is free to the public. Among the players scheduled to play are NBA veterans Cedric Ceballos, Henry Turner and Richard Morton.
