Five Titans Win Awards
March 5, 2012
Irvine, Calif. - All five regular starters for the Cal State Fullerton men's basketball team earned awards Monday as the Big West Conference announced its post-season honors list for 2011-12.
D. J. Seeley was named All-Big West first team as well as newcomer of the year. Omondi Amoke and Kwame Vaughn were selected to the second team and Isiah Umipig and Orane Chin earned honorable mention from the opposing coaches.
"This is the first time I can remember nominating five guys," said Head Coach Bob Burton on a morning conference call. "That's great. They are all deserving."
Seeley also was selected BWC player of the past week for his play in home wins over Cal State Northridge (25 points, 7 rebounds) and Long Beach State (27 points). He also was selected national Mid-Major and Big West player of the week by College Sports Madness website.
Only once previously have three Titans been listed on the first and second all-conference teams. In 2008, Scott Cutley made the first team and Josh Akognon and Frank Robinson were accorded second-team honors as Fullerton won a co-championship. As in 2008, all three of this year's recipients are Div. I transfers.
Fullerton (21-8, 12-4) is the No. 2 seed in the Big West Tournament that begins this week at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The Titans face No. 7 seed UC Irvine (11-19, 6-10) following the noon game between No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara and No. 6 seed Pacific.
