Fullerton, Calif. -
Freshman Josh Ritchart scored 20 points and junior Eddie Miller added another 20 Tuesday night in UC Davis' 88-72 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the first game of Big West Conference play for both teams.
Andre Hardy led Fullerton (4-9) with 19 points and 9 rebounds in his second game back since March, 2009, and Orane Chin added 17 points, but it wasn't enough as Davis (6-7) shot 63 percent in the second half to pull away. Davis shot 41 percent overall at the 3-point line, making 5-of-18 in the first half and 8-of-14 in the second.
Ryan Sypkens (17) and Joe Harden (15) also were in double figures.
Both teams shot below 40 percent in the first half, which Davis led, 36-27. Fullerton got as close as 42-41 at 14:59 on a Chin layup but the Aggies went on a 9-0 run on baskets by four different players. Fullerton pulled within 5 points at 68-63 at 4:40 but Davis scored the next 13 points.
"It's really discouraging to open conference play like this," said CSF Coach Bob Burton. "Our team hasn't played together and our chemistry is not really good. And we're in terrible shape.
"But the real problem is defensively. We didn't want to zone them but it brought us back early in the second half. We get within one point and all of a sudden we didn't step up."
Fullerton will host Pacific Thursday night while Davis travels to Cal State Northridge.
