Portland, OR - Orane Chin scored a career-high 32 points and Jer'Vaughn Johnson had a perfect shooting afternoon on his way to 19 points and 7 rebounds Sunday but it wasn't enough as Portland State used a game-finishing 24-12 run to claim a 93-89 non-conference victory.
The Vikings got 21 points from Charles Odum and 20 -- 18 in the second half -- from Chris Harriel to improve to 6-2 overall and 4-0 at home. The Titans fell to 3-7 and 1-7 on the road.
Fullerton led by 5 at the half and was up 77-69 with about 5 minutes to play after a Devon Peltier trey. But Harriel hit three threes and a deuce in the next 3 minutes and the Vikings pulled within 83-82. Johnson -- who was 7-for-7 from the floor and 5-for-5 at the line -- was called for an offensive foul, his fifth, and left the game with 1;16 to play. PSU outscored Fullerton, 11-6 in the final minute with Odum scoring the final 9 with a 3-point play to make it 87-83 with 32 seconds left and 6-for-6 at the line in the final 24 seconds. The game swung on two offensive foul calls. The first fouled out Johnson and led to two Chehales Tapscott free throws. The second fouled out Chin with 48 seconds left, turning the ball over with an 84-83 deficit and setting up Odum's 3-point play.
Fullerton shot 60 percent from the floor, 45 percent from the 3-point line and 71 percent at the foul line. But PSU shot 53 percent, 36 percent and 83 percent and its 19 of 23 effort at the line trumped Fullerton's 12 of 17.
Fullerton takes the week off for final exams before hosting Occidental on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.
